Accommodation is something to start thinking about before you come to Berlin although it may be difficult to finalise before you arrive. Many students arrange temporary accommodation prior to their arrival and spend the first few weeks of their time here searching for accommodation. The best way you can prepare is to decide which type of accommodation you would like and find out about the options available to you in Berlin.
There are several housing options available in Berlin. Please be aware that for all housing arrangements you will need to pay a deposit that will be paid back to you when you move out again. If you wish to change housing, please note that different cancellation periods might apply.
Students often post available housing on the Hertie Connect network (CONNECT -> Marketplace). Select the “Housing” option to see what is listed there. You can post the details of your own accommodation search there, too.
The Hertie School of Governance is located in the centre of Berlin in the district Mitte. We recommend finding accommodation relatively close to the school. Berlin is a big city with twelve districts with many smaller areas within these districts. When it comes to flat-hunting, try to concentrate your search in central areas such as Mitte, Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, Prenzlauer Berg, Neukölln, Charlottenburg or Schöneberg. Remember to think about the travel distance from your flat to the school. You can check travel times and routes for journeys using public transport at www.bvg.de.
