Hertie School of Governance
From October 25th to October 29th, the Hertie School of Governance welcomed 40 visiting students from its Global Public Policy Network (GPPN) partners for a student-initiated conference on “Development within Governance in the 21st Century.” Students from the London School of Economics, Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, Sciences Po, and the National University of Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy joined students from the Hertie School of Governance to explore a broad range of topics related to the conference topic, including a keynote address from MEP Cem Özdemir on “Democratization in the Muslim World”.
Over the course of the five day conference, four panels with guest speakers, entitled “New Approaches to Development”, “Human Rights and International Law in Practice”, “Public Reconciliation in State Building and Transformation”, as well as “Public Private Partnerships as Good Governance Models for Everything?” challenged students to explore some of the most pressing issues of governance in the 21st century. In addition to these panels, students from each of the partner universities presented their research and work experience. Some social events also gave students the opportunity to network and exchange information on their respective partner universities as well as to understand how public policy is approached differently across the globe.
