As part of the regular UNIQUE Lecture Series organized by the UNi-Gruppe of the German United Nations Association, Dr. Martin Bergfelder from the German Foreign Office spoke on the upcoming negotiations for the Climate Conference in Bali. Dr. Bergfelder described the main challenges for the debates in Bali and outlined the positions of the main actors in a presentation which was not only interesting but very informative.
In the ensuing discussion, Dr. Bergfelder shared insights into his work, answering questions about technical and political approaches to solving the climate crisis. Most prominently, the debate centred around trying to get developing countries on board for the fight against climate change with a proposal based on per-capita emissions. As a closing remark, Dr. Bergfelder commented on the plausibility of different incentive instruments and asserted that the Bali negotiations will only be a starting point for deeper, and longer, negotiations in the upcoming years.
The UNi-Gruppe of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für die Vereinten Nationen (DGVN – United Nations Organisation) has organised the lecture series UNIQUE - United Nations Info Quest since the winter term 2000/2001. The group of students from universities in Berlin and Potsdam invites experts from the United Nations domain who usually speak on a topical subject and engage in a discussion afterwards.
