Hertie School Research Topic: Welfare Regimes

The debate on national welfare states is torn between assessments of strong patterns of continuity, path dependence and a dramatic erosion of the welfare state due to globalization and the rise of the service economy. In fact, the institutional foundations of welfare states adapt only slowly to a rapidly changing social, economic and demographic environment. The research group is particularly interested in the pathways of institutional change and the complementarities between different types of welfare and employment institutions and policy instruments.
