Democratic Self-Determination and Freedom of Movement

international conference in cooperation with the Centre Marc Bloch and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation

Although Europe has increasingly opened up its internal borders to allow free movement of people and goods, thousands of poverty-driven migrants experience increasingly stricter immigration policies at Europe’s borders. Using force against would-be immigrants has proven a source of embarrassment to liberal theorists, who traditionally attach great importance to freedom of movement as an important individual right. On the other hand, liberals are also committed to the right of people to decide with whom to associate. Where possible, people should not be forced into association with others against their will. But does this view exaggerate the importance of democratic self-determination? And who should decide over inclusion and exclusion? How should liberal democracies reconcile their legitimate aspiration for selfdetermination and the individual rights of migrants?

Answers to these questions and related insights that will emerge at the international conference ‘Democratic Self-Determination and Freedom of Movement’ are meant to raise awareness about the ethical and political dimension of international migration and aid policymakers and practitioners as they seek to deal with it.
