As a professional school, the Hertie School emphasises the importance of applying theory to practice.

Drawing on its strong network of international and domestic contacts, the Hertie School not only helps students find suitable institutional matches for their internships, but also offers executive seminars on topics like European policy-making and organisational transformation for participants from public administration, private businesses, and non-governmental organisations. The Hertie School has become a platform where representatives from private, public, and civil society institutions; academics; and students can get to know one another and exchange ideas.

The Hertie School has recently embarked on a special endeavour with one of Germany’s leading auditing, advisory, and accounting firms: KPMG. Together with the Hertie School and the Universität Potsdam, they have recently joined forces in the recruitment for a Professorship of Public and Financial Management (Prof. Gerhard Hammerschmid), in order to start the process of building the faculty for the new Executive Master of Public Management (EMPM) Programme, which was launched in autumn 2008.

Cooperation agreements

The Hertie School has also established cooperation agreements for internship programmes and Executive Education seminars with the following partners:

Internship institutions

Besides the internship agreements, here are some of the institutions that have offered internships in the past:
 ... and many more.

Alumni

The School also enjoys an extensive network of professional contacts through the alumni of the Executive Education and Master's Programmes. The alumni come from NGOs; international organisations; the finance sector; federal, state and local public institutions; think tanks; media outlets; businesses; and consulting firms. For more information on the alumni, see the Alumni page in the Students section.

Fiscal policymakers

The School maintains strong relationships with players in banking, like Deutsche Bank AG, as indicated by a recent visit by Chairman Dr. Josef Ackermann, as well as with the World Bank, where representatives from different departments give presentations at the Hertie School on a regular basis. The School has also conducted consulting work for the German Federal Ministry of Finance: an analysis on the structural preconditions and instruments for a proactive, strategically-oriented fiscal and economic policy.

Professional Year

Finally, a unique Professional Year partnership is in place with several German Federal Ministries and the Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ). The Professional Year allows students to spend 12 to 15 months working at one of the aforementioned institutions within the framework of their studies.
