Funding and Stipends

The Hertie School of Governance seeks to ensure that all admitted candidates have secured the financial means to support the 3 year doctoral programme in Berlin:

  • We can offer stipends to a limited number of applicants: 1,200 EUR /month (including 100 EUR for research and travelling).
  • We will also admit candidates who have secured their own financial means to support their studies. These means can come from different sources such as third party stipends, paid positions in research or other part-time positions. Please take note, however, that we will not be able to admit candidates who work on a paid full-time position.

We therefore ask each candidate to explain their personal circumstances and how they intend to support themself during the 3-year programme in a funding statement. The statement will serve as basis for the financial aid process as each candidate is  asked to indicate if they apply for a Hertie School of Governance stipend.

Please complete the Funding Statement and upload it to our online application portal together with the other application documents.
