Completing the Euro | New report maps the road towards fiscal union in Europe

Hertie School Professor Henrik Enderlein coordinated a new report by Notre Europe‘s Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa Group, which calls for a completion of the Euro on the basis of analyses of the main challenges that face the currency in conjunction with proposals for feasible and decisive  responses to these challenges. The report, Completing the Euro - A road map towards fiscal union in Europe, was prepared under the patronage of Jacques Delors and Helmut Schmidt.

It presents an ambitious plan to turn the eurozone into a closer fiscal union, giving Brussels more powers to serve like a finance ministry for all 17 members of the currency union. It also outlines plans for a banking union and political union.

The report, which was co-authored by Peter Bofinger, Laurence Boone, Paul de Grauwe, Jean-Claude Piris, Jean Pisani-Ferry, Maria João Rodrigues, André Sapir and António Vitorino, looks beyond the short emergencies of the euro area seeking rather to identify its key structural problems.  [more]
