Podcast: Brexit, euroscepticism and the rise of populism

Catherine de Vries discusses how to move the European project forward ahead of the EP elections.

Catherine de Vries, Professor of Political Behaviour in Europe at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Hertie School Board member, spoke on how to move the European project forward, in a discussion with students and Hertie School Dean of Graduate Programmes and Professor of European Politics Christine Reh on 25 March.

De Vries, who is also an affiliated professor at the University of Essex and previously of Oxford University, explored euroscepticism in the context of Brexit and the upcoming European Parliament elections, and its populist appeal to voters across the EU. The discussion centred around the current fragility of the EU economy, immigration, border protection, the crisis of legitimacy facing EU institutions, and the assault of eurosceptic parties, which are predicted to increase their share in the May EP elections.
