Our dedicated career development team is hosting biweekly office hours open to all prospective students. Drop in to ask questions about professional development at the Hertie School.
We know professional development is on a lot of students' minds when they choose a master’s programme. It’s also an important part of the MPP, MIA, MDS and Executive MPA curricula. To accompany you on your career journey, our Career Development team is here to help. This summer, they’re hosting virtual office hours every two weeks.
We invite incoming and prospective students curious about internships, the Professional Year, finding a job after graduation, and anything career-related at the Hertie School to join these sessions, ask questions, and chat with the team!
- 29 June | 17:00-18:00 CEST
- 12 July | 10:00-11:00 CEST
- 27 July | 17:00-18:00 CEST
All sessions will take place on Microsoft Teams via this link.
Meet the team
Fareen Shaikh | Associate
One of my main responsibilities is to conduct 4-week intensive Career Bootcamps, designed to equip students with tools and resources to succeed in their job search. I cover various topics, from job search strategies, career documents (e.g. CV, cover letter) and LinkedIn profiles to interview coaching. I’ll also help with fostering alumni relations.
Laura Jaspers | Consultant
I cover a variety of career related topics like coaching, mock interviews and career advice. I love developing and organising event formats where students and graduates get insights into different career fields and inspiration from professionals, be it alumni or external contacts.
Anne Macauley | Consultant
I offer coaching sessions, organise and plan career-related events, and help you figure out which career path to pursue after graduating from Hertie. I love networking and connecting people to each other. So please get in touch!
We also asked Fareen, Laura and Anne three questions for their perspective on career development at the Hertie School.
If you could share one important career tip, what would it be?
Fareen: Seek a career and not just a job. Always be strategic in your job search, and aim to land opportunities that will help you achieve your long-term goals.
Laura: Don’t plan the whole journey, but make conscious decisions about the next step. Be open to unexpected encounters or opportunities that only arise when you embrace new things. Sounds very zen-like, but it works.
Anne: Don’t just take the first job offer you get. Take time to reflect on what you are passionate about, what motivates you and where you see your purpose.
What are you looking forward to the most with the new incoming cohort (and returning students) this fall?
Fareen: Coaching Hertie students has always been a two-way street. As much as I coach them on various career related aspects, their knowledge helps me grow as a coach. I’m really looking forward to understanding students’ strengths and help them make guided career decisions while learning through their journeys.
Laura: Since I am still very new to the Hertie team and had my onboarding during the lockdown, I am curious to meet students in person – may it be during coaching sessions or at one of our events and workshops. We are planning very different event formats now, and I am looking forward to seeing them happen.
Anne: I love getting to know you and learning about your experiences, expectations and ideas. In my own interview for this job, I was told that the Hertie School is the place with the highest density of idealists in all of Berlin. So I am excited to hear of your visions on how to make the world a better place.
What is your favourite place or thing to do in Berlin?
Fareen: I am a foodie. Berlin being a multi-cultural city, you'll often find me at restaurants enjoying different cuisines and embracing different cultures. One of my favourite restaurants is an Ethiopian restaurant called Lalibela, and if you’re looking for authentic Indian food you should try Chutnify.
Laura: Nou Tango, the tango school in Berlin Mitte where I made my first tango steps and experienced so many beautiful evenings and dances. :)
Anne: There are so many beautiful lakes all around Berlin which I love going to in the summer. You can easily reach them by public transport. Take a bicycle along and explore nature around the city. Check out this page for inspiration: Ausflugstouren | S-Bahn Berlin GmbH (sbahn.berlin)
You can also catch Fareen, Laura and Anne at our upcoming webinar on career development at the Hertie School on Monday, 28 June, at 5:00 pm CEST. Register for the event here.
