Tips for contacting alumni

Please bear in mind that you should approach your alumni network as you would approach any potential employer:

  • Be diligent: Make sure your spelling and terminology in an email are absolutely correct. Ideally an alumnus/a should be able to pass on any written document to their contacts without having to rework it.
  • Be prepared: When an alumnus/a makes time to talk to you, be respectful of their time and prepare concrete questions that they can help you with.
  • Be specific: Make a clear statement about what you are asking for so that your contact knows what to expect.
  • Be realistic: Alumni are not automatically aware of job openings. Being a member of the network still means that you will need to search for jobs in a proactive way and flag openings that you are going to apply for, then reach out to alumni to get specific advice or support to help you with your application.

If you take these few pointers to heart, there is a high chance that any alumnus/a would be happy to respond to you and share their insights with you.
