Tips for contacting alumni
Please bear in mind to approach your alumni network as you would approach any potential employer:
- Be diligent: Make sure your spelling and terminology in an e-mail is absolutely correct. Ideally an alumnus/a is able to pass on any written document to their contacts without reworking.
- Be prepared: When an alumnus/a makes time to talk to you, be respectful with their time and prepare concrete questions they can help you with.
- Be specific: Make a clear statement about what you are asking for so your contact knows what to expect.
- Be realistic: Alumni will not automatically have an eye on job openings. Being a member of the network still means you will proactively search for jobs and flag openings that you are determined to apply for, and then reach out to alumni to get specific advice or support for your application.
If you take these few pointers to heart, any alumnus/a will very likely be happy to respond to you and share their insights with you.
