Andrea Römmele analyses first Baden-Württemberg state election debate

Green and CDU Party coalition partners are campaigning against each other ahead of state election.

In an interview with German broadcaster SWR on 1 March, Hertie School Professor of Communication in Politics and Civil Society Andrea Römmele provided her analysis on the first televised debate between leadership candidates in the Baden-Württemberg state election.

Winfried Kretschmann, current Premier, and Christian Democratic Union’s (CDU) Susanne Eisenmann, his coalition partner, did not help undecided voters, she said.

Instead, she added, the debate was a “missed opportunity for both candidates”, who failed to position themselves clearly.

The 2021 Baden-Württemberg state election will be held on 14 March.
