Anke Hassel on the SPD's electoral prospects

Professor of Public Policy speaks to the Guardian about German election campaign messaging.

As Germany prepares to replace Chancellor Angela Merkel, a leading contender for the job is Olaf Scholz, Chancellor Candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SPD). A Guardian article on the SPD's policy platform and chances of victory features Professor of Public Policy Anke Hassel, an expert on welfare states.

"The SPD’s current pitch is more conciliatory: we’ll make sure that those who can’t move up [the social ladder] won’t be left out in the cold," Hassel commented.

Germany's federal election will be held on 26 September.
