Christ Gläßel's dissertation, Subversive Threats, Repression, and Stability, was awarded the best dissertation in social sciences 2020 at the University of Mannheim.
Christian Gläßel, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Centre for International Security, has won the 2020 Lorenz-von-Stein Prize awarded by the Lorenz-von-Stein-Gesellschaft, an association for the advancement of the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES).
Gläßel’s dissertation, Subversive Threats, Repression, and Stability, deals with the inner workings of autocracies. His work examines the organization of autocratic security apparatuses, the types of repression with which dictatorships respond to perceived threats (physical repression or information manipulation) as well as the conditions under which repression undermines dictatorships. The dissertation draws on unique archival sources on the right-wing military dictatorship in Argentina (1976-83) and the socialist regime of the German Democratic Republic.
Every year, the Lorenz-von-Stein prize honours the best dissertation in the field of social sciences at the University of Mannheim and the Mannheim Graduate School of Economic and Social Sciences (GESS).
