Centre contributes expertise on the protection of freedoms enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
On 10 December 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, an event celebrated around the world as Human Rights Day each year. This milestone document proclaims the rights to which every human being is entitled – regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.
The Centre for Fundamental Rights is commemorating the 72nd anniversary of the Declaration through a series of online events and contributions to the discussion around the state of universal rights in the world today.
7 December: Human Rights Lawyering at the Front Line
Join Centre Co-Director Başak Çalı for a panel discussion on Human rights Lawyering at the Front Line, in conjunction with the German premiere of Jeff Kaufmann’s documentary NASRIN, depicting the life of the Iranian human rights lawyer and women’s rights activist Nasrin Sotoudeh.
8 December: Freedom of Expression and Fair Trial Rights
Join ARTICLE 19, an international human rights organisation that defends the freedom of speech, for a discussion featuring Centre Co-Director Başak Çalı on violations of fair trial rights and freedom of expression in Turkey. For more information, see their event page.
9 December: Centre for Fundamental Rights Colloquium
This week’s colloquium welcomes Anuscheh Farahat , who will speak on The potential of non-discrimination clauses for the inclusion of migrants. Farahat is Professor of Public Law, Migration Law and Human Rights Law at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg.

Racial Borders
Missed our most recent edition of our online discussion series “Fundamental Rights in Practice”? On 1 December we hosted E. Tendayi Achiume, UN Special Rapporteur on Contemporary Forms of Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance. Achiume, who is Professor of Law at UCLA, spoke on “Racial Aphasia” and the intersection between racial injustice and migration governance. In a conversation with Centre Co-Director Cathryn Costello, Achiume shared some of her experiences as UN Special Rapporteur.
