German politics must become more diverse and accessible to people from all backgrounds, the Professor of Communication in Politics and Civil Society writes.
As the political landscape in Germany changes, new talents have emerged on the scene. However, structural limitations continue to hinder people from non-academic backgrounds from starting a career in politics, writes Professor of Communication in Politics and Civil Society Andrea Römmele in an op-ed for DIE ZEIT from 2 June 2022.
“Entry-level opportunities in German politics must become more accessible for people from different professional backgrounds,” she writes. The expert on current affairs further highlights the importance of bringing new ideas and knowledge from other parts of society into politics. As an alternative to the classic political career path, new ways of education and training could encourage people from underrepresented groups to enter politics, Römmele writes.
