The disinterest of many Germans in the presidential campaign can be explained in several ways. The Russian attack on Ukraine is attracting a lot of media attention, and until recently, many Germans had firmly assumed that President Macron would be re-elected, as Yann Wernert notes. Nevertheless, the political situation in France and polls suggest that the race could be much closer than in 2017. If the Rassemblement National candidate Marine Le Pen is elected, Franco-German cooperation and the European project would be very much affected, according to Heidi Bräuer.
