Mark Kayser on what storming of Capitol means for US democracy

In an interview with ARTE Journal, Kayser laid out what is most concerning about Wednesday's events.

In a 7 January interview with the news program ARTE Journal, Hertie School Professor of Applied Methods and Comparative Politics Mark Kayser addressed the dangers posed by this week's events at the US Capitol.

"It's tough to overstate just how shocking the events were," he said, adding that an unacceptable line had been crossed when pro-Trump protesters stormed Congress and shut down proceedings.

Though Kayser said he does not believe the protesters pose an immediate threat to the democratic transfer of power on 20 January, he expressed concern about the long-term influence of Trump's supporters in US politics.

The interview (in German) will be available on January 7 only on the ARTE website.
