Peter Cutler developed an interest in international development, which became the focus of his studies and early career following an upbringing in East Africa. He spent a few years working in development (at the United Nations in Lebanon and Innovations for Poverty Action in Uganda), where he became concerned about the lack of local ownership in the development process. As a result, he became interested in finance and the opportunities this sector creates for development using market mechanisms. After working briefly for a boutique ethical hedge fund where he gained practical experience in finance, he began his Master of International Affairs with a focus on trade and finance.
