Focus on issues, not just candidates

The Greens and the Social Democrats in Germany allow party members to determine who leads their parties, and ultimately, who the party's top candidate for Chancellor will be. Now young members of the Christian Democratic party are making similar demands. But such a so-called primary election also has disadvantages, writes Andrea Römmele, Professor of Communication in Politics and Civil Society at the Hertie School in an op-ed in Zeit Online (in German).
