Join us for a discussion about AI and the Green Agenda with Eva Kaili (Vice President, European Parliament), Joanna Bryson (Professor of Ethics and Technology), Jennifer Courant (Head of Sustainability, Culture and Talent at Deutsche Bank Technology, Data and Innovation) and Lynn Kaack (Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Public Policy).

How can we use artificial intelligence to advance our sustainable, environmental and social goals as a Union? What are the tech innovations being developed within the EU for this purpose, and what might the regulation look like in this scenario? 

Join the discussion on 'AI and the Green Agenda', where European Parliament Vice-President Eva Kaili, Joanna Bryson (Professor of Ethics and Technology) and Lynn Kaack (Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Public Policy) will answer these and other related questions in a fireside chat. Jennifer Courant (Head of Sustainability, Culture and Talent at Deutsche Bank Technology, Data and Innovation) will join the subsequent discussion, along with a group of Hertie School students.

Speakers

  • Eva Kaili is a Member of the European Parliament (MEP), part of the Hellenic S&D Delegation since 2014. In January 2022, she was elected as Vice-President of the European Parliament for the second half of the 9th legislature. Her responsibilities include the Parliament’s ICT Innovation Strategy, Informatics & Telecommunications, European Strategy and Policy Analysis System, the Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA), Corporate Social Responsibility, and replacing the President for business associations, Middle East, and multilateral bodies, including the UN and the WTO.

  • Joanna Bryson is Professor of Ethics and Technology at the Hertie School. She is also a faculty member at the Hertie School Centre for Digital Governance. Her research focuses on the impact of technology on human cooperation, and AI/ICT governance. Since July 2020, Prof. Bryson has been one of nine experts nominated by Germany to the Global Partnership for Artificial Intelligence.

  • Jennifer Courant leads the Sustainability, Culture & Talent Team within TDI to focus on delivering the bank’s ESG strategy, evolving the bank’s ways of working, and developing and engaging the bank’s employees. Prior to this, Jennifer was the Group Chief Data Officer, accountable for driving expert management and use of Data assets across the bank. Based in New York, Jennifer also performs the role of Americas Head of TDI which includes interfacing with the bank’s US regulators and providing oversight of regional technology delivery and management. 

  • Lynn Kaack is Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Public Policy at the Hertie School. She is affilliated with the School's Centre for Sustainability and its Data Science Lab. Her research and teaching focuses on methods from statistics and machine learning to inform climate mitigation policy across the energy sector, and on climate-related AI policy. She is a co-founder and chair of Climate Change AI, which is an organization to facilitate work at the intersection of machine learning and climate action.
