European economic policy in the age of Trump

Current affairs series with Mark Hallerberg (Professor of Public Management and Political Economy, Hertie School).
The event is open to the Hertie School community.

The focus in the American debate on economic policy is inward looking. It does not anticipate what responses outside the US will be to Trump’s policies on taxes, trade, and tariffs. Discussions in Europe so far seem defensive and reactionary; that is, someone in the Trump administration criticises the size of a current account surplus and a European policy-maker then either keeps quiet or says something in return. How should Europe act, and not just react, towards the American President in the economic realm?
