Join guest speakers Anmol Somanchi, Nitin Bharti, and Christophe Jaffrelot, for a Policy & Pizza session discussing the political dimensions of unequal development and economic inequality in India, and how this stark divide impacts on India’s social fabric and democratic processes.
As with our ‘Policy and Pizza’ sessions, this is an opportunity to engage directly with practitioners and leaders shaping the world of policy and international relations in a meaningful way. Bring your questions!
This discussion will be held in collaboration with the Hertie School South Asia Society (HSSAS) and Work Economy and Social Policy (WESP). The event is public, will be in English, and will be hosted at the Henrik Enderlein Forum at the Hertie School in Berlin. There will be no live stream. Due to limited seating, registration is required.
Free drinks and pizza will be served from 6:00 pm, and the talk will begin at 6:30 pm.

Speakers
Anmol Somanchi
Anmol Somanchi is a PhD candidate at Paris School of Economics and the Global Justice Coordinator at the World Inequality Lab. His research interests lie broadly in labour economics (market power of employers), development economics (social protection) and inequality studies. He holds a BA (Hons.) Economics from Delhi University, a MA Development Studies from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai and a MRes Economics (APE) from the Paris School of Economics.
Nitin Bharti
Nitin Bharti is a postdoctoral scholar in the Economics department of the New York University-Abu Dhabi. He received his Ph.D. from the Paris School of Economics and the University of Namur in 2022. Before that, he earned his bachelor’s degree from IIT-Kharagpur and has two years of experience working in the corporate sector. He is an applied micro-economist, and his research interests lie in understanding the development of educational systems and their linkage with economic growth and inequality. He is also interested in studying the long-term evolution of economic inequalities in the South Asia region. He along with Thomas Piketty, Anmol Somanchi and Lucas Chancel co-wrote the report on the trends of Inequality in India. He will be joining as Assistant Professor at University of Western Australia from next semester.
Christophe Jaffrelot
Christophe Jaffrelot is a French political scientist specialising in South Asia, particularly India and Pakistan. He is a professor of South Asian politics and history the Centre d'études et de recherches internationales (CERI) at Sciences Po (Paris), a professor of Indian Politics and Sociology at the King's India Institute (London), and a Research Director at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS).
His publications on India cover aspects of Indian politics and democracy, nationalism, caste mobilisation and ethnic conflicts. His latest book Gujarat Under Modi delves into the tenure of Modi as the Chief Minister of Gujarat and how he has transformed the political, social and economic landscape of the state.
