Fall Semester 2020

Whether onsite or online, welcome back!

What the Hertie School is doing to make your return safe and successful.

The Hertie School is pleased to welcome students back for the 2020/21 Academic Year. Together, we all share the responsibility for keeping our community safe and healthy. So to ensure you stay safe, find what you need and get off to a successful start, we’ve set up a number of rules and measures for daily operations, which are outlined below.  Check out the more detailed pages of our website for further information.  Here are a few tips to get you started:

Your safety comes first - and Student Life is here to help. Reach out to Student Life for answers to all your questions - and be sure to let them know if you aren’t feeling well. Get help with visas, residence permits, COVID-19 regulations, health insurance, housing and more.

Onsite teaching with social distancing. We are committed to onsite teaching for our students in Berlin – adhering to social distancing rules. We’ve taken a number of measures to ensure your safety: sign-up sheets for study and reading rooms, separating desks in classrooms and other rooms. You’ll find everything you need to know about onsite classes on Moodle.

Study from home. Our Digital Learning Team and IT have developed learning tools, trained faculty and assistants and outfitted our classrooms with the technology for remote learning. A combination of pre-recorded and live classes will accommodate different time zones, as will labs.  You’ll find everything you need to know about online classes on Moodle.

Remember to follow these rules:

  • Wear masks. Masks are mandatory in shared spaces and whenever more than one person is in a room, including in classes, offices, and meeting rooms.

  • Maintain social distancing. Stay at least 1.5 metres apart from others.

  • Air out rooms. Have a window open or air the room at least twice an hour.

  • Wash your hands. Use the lavatory and/or the hand disinfectant the school has provided on every floor.

  • Cough/sneeze into your elbow. This reduces aerosol transmission and keeps your hands clean.

  • Please sign in visitors. The reception desk will now take down the contact details of guests from outside our community.

  • Reserve spaces. Whether you’re reserving a study room or a spot in the reading room, make sure you sign yourself and anyone you’re bringing up online. This is crucial to using these resources safely.

  • Report symptoms. If you develop known symptoms or test positive for Covid-19, please keep Student Life in the loop so we can keep the entire Hertie School community safe.

  • Stay home if you're sick. If you exhibit any symptoms of COVID-19, please stay home. You can always conduct your studies remotely.
