The Hertie School event “The European jihadism wave of the 2010s: Lessons and prospects” on 3 December featured a lecture by Thomas Hegghammer, an expert on militant Islamism. The lecture covered the the causes, evolution, and revival prospects of the latest militant wave, in particular current activity in Europe, and was followed by an in depth question and answer session.
Hegghammer is Senior Research Fellow at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) and Adjunct Professor of Political Science at the University of Oslo. Trained in Middle East Studies at Oxford University and Sciences-Po in Paris, he has held fellowships at Harvard, Princeton, New York, and Stanford Universities, and at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He has worked on militant Islamism since before 9/11 and has published extensively on the topic. His most recent books are Jihadi Culture: The Art and Social Practices of Militant Islamists (Cambridge, 2017) and The Caravan: Abdallah Azzam and the Rise of Global Jihad (Cambridge, forthcoming).
The event was chaired by Julian Wucherpfennig, Assistant Professor of International Affairs and Security at the Hertie School, whose research focuses on the strategic nature of political violence and conflict processes, especially ethnic civil war and terrorism.
