Consultancies seek to recruit Hertie School graduates

Annual fair is a chance for Hertie School students and consulting professionals to engage.

Consulting professionals from the private and public sectors presented their firms and work at the annual Hertie School Consulting Fair on 16 February. Many alumni currently working at around a dozen firms were on hand to answer students’ questions, exchange business cards and provide insights on career possibilities for Hertie School graduates.

“This is a great opportunity for students to engage with professionals from the field and find out how they got into consulting,” said Anna von Behr, Manager of Career Development and Alumni Affairs at the Hertie School. “We were grateful to have so many top-level consultancies join us for the event this year.”

Anne von Fallois, director of Political Relations at Kienbaum International Consultants in Berlin and a member of the Hertie School Practice Council, spoke on opportunities in public sector consulting. Some of the current hot topics confronting the field are digitalisation, e-government, change management, budget constraints and the battle for talent, Fallois noted.

Aside from master’s degrees in public administration or political science, firms are looking for people who have an interdisciplinary perspective and the ability to analyse public policy, who bring experience in project management, and expertise in public administration standards, as well as an understanding of public value and public sector processes.

Hertie School students are well-equipped for many of the skills consulting firms are seeking, especially those who work with the public sector, says Anna von Behr, and are one of the main employers of Hertie School graduates. Alumni work at boutique as well as at the big management consultancies, helping to solve complex problems in the public sector.
