Anke Hassel new Academic Director of the Institute of Economic and Social Research

Hassel will remain Hertie School Professor of Public Policy, Clasen takes over teaching.

Anke Hassel, Professor of Public Policy at the Hertie School, has been named Academic Director of the Institute of Economic and Social Research (WSI) at the Hans Böckler Foundation. The political scientist and economist will take temporary leave from teaching at the Hertie School for five years. She will continue to supervise doctoral students and conduct research, such as on the cause and effects of the global financial crisis under the three-year ‘STARS’ project, funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research. “We are sure that Professor Hassel will inspire momentum for new and important ideas in her role as WSI director. We are very pleased about her appointment and that she will continue as Professor of Public Policy at the Hertie School, yielding many opportunities for cooperation,” said Helmut Anheier, Dean of the Hertie School.

The Hertie School welcomes for the academic year 2016/17 Professor Jochen Clasen, who will assume some of Anke Hassel’s previous duties. Jochen Clasen is Professor of Comparative Social Policy at the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh. He is a leading expert in social policy research.
