APSIA awards 2021 Junior Faculty Grant to Hertie School and Maxwell School assistant profs

The Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA) has awarded one of its two 2021 Junior Faculty Grants to Simon Munzert, Assistant Professor of Data Science and Public Policy at the Hertie School and Johannes Himmelreich, Assistant Professor at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School for an interdisciplinary project involving ethics, data science and public policy teaching.

The grant comes as both schools are in the process of establishing data science programmes and concentrations for public policy students. The Hertie School’s Master of Data Science for Public Policy (MDS) will launch in fall 2021.

The two assistant professors will create a teaching module on the role of ethics in the development and governance of emerging technologies. The module will be developed over the spring and summer of 2021 and implemented in the fall at the Hertie School and the Maxwell School.

Each institution will also host a hybrid workshop, “Promoting Research and Teaching of Ethics and Data Science”, which will be open to both students and faculty to foster exchange on the topic. Researchers from other universities and APSIA institutions will be encouraged to join online.

APSIA has offered grants for pre-tenure and recently-tenured faculty at APSIA members and affiliates since 2019. The fund invests in projects that foster collaboration within the APSIA network, particularly across national borders.
