The Professor of Sociology will lead 2024 report on single and separated-parent households for family affairs ministry.

The German Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ) has appointed Hertie School Professor of Sociology Michaela Kreyenfeld to chair a seven-member, interdisciplinary panel of experts who will author the ministry's tenth "Family Report".

The report, expected in July 2024, will focus on outlining the diverse living situations families in Germany face, especially that of single-parent and separated-parent families, and providing policy recommendations. The experts will examine the impact of parental separation on areas such as well-being, health, the labour market and social security.

The German parliament requires the government to produce a report on the situation of families at least every second legislature period, with the aim of guiding family policy-making. Kreyenfeld was also a member of the expert commission that authored the previous report, published in March 2021.

The expert panel comprises professors and researchers from across Germany who are working in the fields of sociology, pedagogy, therapy, public health and equality. Kreyenfeld, who is an expert on family sociology and demography, is also a member of the ministry's Scientific Advisory Board for Family Issues.
