Hertie School leadership congratulates Board Member Alison Smale on new United Nations post

Smale to head up Department of Public Information as Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications.

Hertie School Chairman of the Board of Trustees Frank Mattern and President Helmut K. Anheier warmly congratulate Board of Trustees Member Alison Smale on her appointment as Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications at the United Nations. She will head up the Department of Public Information in New York.

Smale has been Berlin Bureau Chief for The New York Times since 2013, following five years in Paris as the Executive Editor of the International Herald Tribune. Previously, she was Managing Editor of the IHT and before that, Deputy Foreign Editor of the New York Times. She joined the Hertie School Board of Trustees in September 2013.

Her 40-year career in journalism also took her to Vienna as Bureau Chief for The Associated Press for Central and Eastern Europe and to Moscow and Bonn as a correspondent.

Smale studied in Bristol, Munich and at Stanford University and holds a Bachelor of Arts in German and Politics, and a Master of Arts in Journalism. In 2009 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Law from Bristol University.
