Hertie School community – secure your ticket for the Human Rights Film Forum

The Centre for Fundamental Rights is a main partner in the Human Rights Film Forum, a public venue for dialogue on topics related to the 2020 Berlin Human Rights Film Festival. The Film Forum will consist of workshops, conferences and discussions in four key areas: climate crisis, populism and hate speech, gender and sexual based violence and the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations Member States in 2015. The Forum events, which will take place from 1 – 9 October, are open to activists, researchers and people from the arts, who are interested in forming strategic partnerships.

The Centre for fundamental Rights together with the Human Rights Film Forum offer Hertie School students, researchers, faculty and administration tickets to participate at the Forum events.

We will send you a code that will allow you to attend the forum events without additional charge. Each code grants free access to three workshops taking place at the Forum and to one of the films screened at the forum.

More about the programme

As part of the workshop on “Storytelling as Resistance”, which will take place on 2 October and focus on resistance against populism, disinformation and hate speech, Prof. Başak Çalı, co-director of the Centre for Fundamental Rights and Professor of International Law at the Hertie School, will moderate the discussion on resistance against Populism from a comparative perspective. The panel will feature legal actors, journalists and human rights activists from Poland, Turkey and Germany to discuss the rise of different forms of populism and the resistance strategies developed against them. Simon Munzert, Assistant Professor of Data Science and Public Policy at the Hertie School, will discuss the effects that restriction of hate speech has on self-censorship, based on evidence from Germany and from the USA.

Pierre Thielbörger, Professor of German Public Law and International Law at the Ruhr University Bochum and affiliated with the Hertie School’s Centre for Fundamental Rights, Alexandre Skander Galand, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Centre for Fundamental Rights and Juan Auz, PhD Researcher at the Centre, will moderate discussions and offer expertise on questions of fundamental rights protections discussed at the panel on “10 years to reach the Sustainable Development Goals” that will take place on 5 October. Auz will also participate at the Climate Story Lab, the third edition of the successful format developed by DocSociety and Exposure Labs and hosted previously in New York and London, which will take plave from 6 - 8 October.
