Lynn Kaack discusses the use of machine learning to analyse scale of global solar installations in Nature

She comments on new research in the use of machine learning and satellite imagery and presents next steps for the field.

Using satellite imagery, researchers have shown that machine learning can help analyse the scale of solar energy installations around the globe. This can inform global energy and land-use planning. In an article in Nature's News&Views section published on 27 October, 2021, Hertie School Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Public Policy Lynn Kaack comments on a recent study by Kruitwagen et al., also published in Nature. The authors used machine learning to produce an inventory of solar-panel installations based on satellite images. Kaack analyses the policy implications of their findings and next steps for the field.
