Marina Henke and Abraham Newman discuss the transatlantic relationship

Prof. Dr. Henke and Prof. Dr. Newman took part in a panel discussion at the German-American Trade and Tech Conference.

On 15 February, Marina Henke, Professor of International Relations and Director of the Hertie School’s Centre for International Security, and Abraham Newman, Research Fellow at the Centre for International Security and Professor of Government at Georgetown University, spoke as guests in a 'spotlight conversation' at the German-American Trade and Tech Conference. The discussion was entitled 'Lost in Translation? Understandings and Misunderstandings in the Transatlantic Relationship', and was moderated by Sudha David-Wilp, Director of the Berlin Office of the German Marshall Fund of the United States.

In the discussion, Prof. Dr. Henke highlighted the need to move the narrative beyond a competition between China and the West. To do this, the conversation has to address more than only economic prosperity and has to include partner states. Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Newman emphasised the necessity of a new language for talking about the transatlantic relationship, one which better fits a world in which interdependent value chains and centralisation can be utilised by governments as tools of warfare.
