In an op-ed published by the Heinrich Böll-Stiftung, Payam Ghalehdar elaborates on why Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer's proposed reset to transatlantic relations is inherently flawed.
In his opinion piece, Payam Ghalehdar, Fellow at the Centre for International Security, says that while Kramp-Karrenbauer is right in assessing the need of an update to the transatlantic partnership, her proposed New Deal does not sufficiently address a potential transatlantic stumbling block: China.
Ghalehdar argues that even with the new Biden Administration incoming, there will likely be no simple return to a pre-Trump Status Quo, as transatlantic priorities have shifted. Not only is the US expecting an increase in German defense spending, but also a rather fundamental "realignment of Berlin's China policy".
