In an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung, Römmele says that the party needs to rally behind new leader.
On 15 and 16 January, Germany’s Christian Democrats (CDU) will choose their new party leader during an online convention. Corporate lawyer Friedrich Merz, foreign affairs expert Norbert Röttgen and North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President Armin Laschet are vying for the leadership.
“With 20 percent of delegates undecided, the candidates must find a way to connect with the membership and make their case on screen,” says Hertie School Professor of Communication in Politics and Civil Society Andrea Römmele, adding that this is an enormous task given that party conferences are normally held in person. Equally important, says Römmele, is uniting behind the winning candidate once a new leader has been chosen.
“It's going to take an enormous amount of discipline to do that.”
