Podcast EU to go: Back to the Downturn: How Crisis-Proof is the EU?

In the twenty-seventh episode of the EU to go podcast, Thu Nguyen speaks with Rolf Strauch, Chief Economist at the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), and Johannes Lindner about the multiple crises Europe is currently facing and how alarming the situation really is.

The EU is in the midst of several crises: Not yet recovered from the pandemic, it is now facing war, energy and inflation crises. And behind closed doors, one can already hear concerns about a new financial crisis. Thu Nguyen discusses with Johannes Lindner, co-director of the Jacques Delors Centre, and Rolf Strauch, chief economist at the ESM, how crisis-proof the EU is and what instruments are needed to ensure that it remains resilient in the future. In a deep dive, the two guests draw a line from past crises to Adam Tooze's theory of polycrisis to today's situation and explain what matters now. Both guests agree: In terms of its crisis resilience, the EU is in a better position today than it was ten years ago.
