Cultivating green capital

At the Bundesbank, alumna Claudia Müller helps mobilise private green finance in the international system.

Claudia Müller, MPP 2012, has spent the last two years in Frankfurt at the Deutsche Bundesbank, Germany’s central bank, dealing with green finance in the international monetary affairs division. There, she liaises with partner organisations like the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, regional development banks, or the G20, to find ways for the financial system to mobilise private capital for green investment.

After her BSc in international economics, Müller studied public policy at the Hertie School with a focus on development economics. “This was the perfect combination” for her current position, she says. “I always need to have the economic and central bank background in mind, but I also look at very political processes, like discussions in the G20,” she says. “The key is to think about who might be in favour of building coalitions and about how to frame an argument. This is certainly what I learned at the Hertie School.”

At the Bundesbank, Müller says she particularly likes the mix of striving for social good through green finance at an independent, non-partisan central bank that is the steward of stability for the financial system.
