In an interview in Deutschlandfunk for "Europa heute", Deputy Director Nicole Koenig spoke about the Strategic Compass and the enduring gap between ambition and reality in EU security policy.
With the approch of the adoption of the Strategic Compass in March and heightening tensions with Russia, European strategic autonomy and coordination on security issues has become more important than ever. However, Nicole Koenig cautions against having high expectations for the Strategic Compass, saying "the EU is good at promising much in defence and delivering little." With unamity required to adopt the Strategic Compass and many different preferences between Member States, it is likely that compromises will have to be made.
