Berlin, 2 May 2019 - Health economist Mujaheed Shaikh will take up a new position at the Hertie School in May 2019 as Professor of Health Governance. Shaikh has taught and conducted research at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, with a focus on efficiency and competition in health systems, health-risk behaviour and health care issues in developing countries and in the global context.
The professorship is funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung GmbH as part of the project "Restart: A Heath Care Reform Workshop” (“Neustart!”). The project aims to develop reform proposals for sustainable health care in Germany. Mujaheed Shaikh will, among other things, be the academic director of a series of Think Labs involving experts from academia and practice. In this function, he will take over from Klaus Hurrelmann, Professor of Public Health and Education, who led the “Restart” project during its conception and start-up phases.
The new professorship underlines the importance of health policy and health governance in the portfolio of the Hertie School. The university is responding to growing demand both from students and in the field of science-based policy advice. In view of the enormous challenge of ensuring the security of the health care system in the future, the Hertie School is breaking new ground in this area, together with the Robert Bosch Stiftung and its "Restart” program.
