Hertie School Stands in Solidarity with Alum David Ramos Félix Following Politically Motivated Attack

David Ramos Félix (MPP 2023) was brutally attacked while on campaign work connected to the latest Mexican elections on 2 June.

In a distressing turn of events, Hertie School alum David Ramos Félix (MPP 2023) was subjected to a brutal, politically motivated attack while engaging in campaign work related to the latest elections in Mexico on June 2. The Hertie School community stands united in support of David during this challenging time.

Hertie School President Cornelia Woll expressed her deep concern and solidarity, stating, "Many of you know David, who has been an engaged and enthusiastic student, classmate, and friend. He has been particularly active in bringing Latin American politics to Berlin, not least in his role as general coordinator of Hertie’s Latin American Club. We hope with David that justice will be done quickly to hold his attackers accountable. We are also deeply shaken to see such acts of political violence touch another member of the Hertie School community."

This act of violence has deeply shaken the Hertie School community. Dozens of alumni from around the world shared their support and well wishes with David on a community platform launched after the attack. These messages reflect the collective hope for his swift recovery and the pursuit of justice.

This attack on David follows a recent violent incident in Germany, where another Hertie alum, Matthias Ecke (EMPA 2021), was assaulted while putting up election posters in Dresden for his candidacy in the last European elections. These back-to-back attacks on Hertie alumni underscore a troubling trend of political violence that strikes at the core of the Hertie School’s democratic principles and values.

The Hertie School condemns these acts of violence unequivocally and reaffirms its commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for political expression and engagement. Such incidents serve as stark reminders of the ongoing challenges faced by those who bravely participate in the democratic process.
