Carolina Matamoros Ferro, Krishna Kumar Rajamanna named Next Generation participants at ICANN58 in Copenhagen.
Congratulations to Hertie School students Carolina Matamoros Ferro (MPP 18) and Krishna Kumar Rajamanna (MPP 17) who were chosen to give presentations at ICANN58, a selective conference related to the Internet ecosystem and Internet governance, which takes place 11-16 March 2017 in Copenhagen. Fifteen participants were selected from various European universities based on their current studies and interest in global Internet policy. They will give a 10-15 minute presentation related to the work of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) and their studies.
ICANN is a non-profit organisation that coordinates Internet maintenance and aims to ensure its stable and secure operation. The group also promotes the idea that the Internet should be borderless and accessible to all, it fosters competition, and strives to influence policies related to the Internet’s system of domain names.
“I think ICANN is the place where all my top interests converge: Security and defence, tools of governance and operational research,” says Carolina, who hopes to focus her thesis on the challenge of balancing global Internet governance while working under nationalised Internet domains.
Krishna’s thesis focuses on the transfer of Internet governance from the US government to global multi-stakeholders within the ICANN community, which he views as “a historical moment for the bottom-up, stakeholder-led governance model.” As a selected participant, Krishna hopes to get in touch with the relevant stakeholders with the right questions.
