Esteemed scholars Renate Mayntz and Fritz Scharpf will receive top Hertie honour for their academic contribution to the understanding of governance.

Berlin, 29 August 2024. The Hertie School is delighted to announce that it will bestow its first ever honorary doctorates upon renowned scholars Renate Mayntz and Fritz Scharpf at the opening ceremony of the 2024/25 Academic Year.

The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, 4 September 2024 at the Hertie School.

“Renate Mayntz and Fritz Scharpf have inspired generations of scholars and policymakers and shaped how we think about our capacity to steer politics and society,” says Hertie School President Cornelia Woll. “It is our privilege to recognise their lifetime achievements with the highest academic honour the Hertie School can bestow.”

Invaluable contributions to the Hertie School

Mayntz, a pioneer in sociology and organisation studies, has made invaluable contributions to our understanding of complex systems and social change. Scharpf, a distinguished legal scholar and political scientist, is celebrated for his analysis of institutional dynamics in federal systems and the European Union. The actor-centred institutionalism they have jointly developed provides insights into the dynamics necessary to create policy change and drive political, economic and social developments. Their work has had a profound influence on the Hertie School's research and teaching, in particular our interdisciplinary curriculum, which combines empirical and theoretical knowledge of public affairs.

Renate Mayntz and Fritz Scharpf are both Emeriti Directors at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG) in Cologne.
