In Constructing Allied Cooperation, Henke demonstrates how pivotal states use diplomatic ties to build military coalitions.
Marina Henke, Professor of International Relations at the Hertie School and Director of the Centre for International Security, has won the 2020 “Best Book Award” from the American Political Science Association (APSA) International Collaboration Section for her book Constructing Allied Cooperation: Diplomacy, Payments, and Power in Multilateral Military Coalitions. The awards will be presented at the 2020 APSA Business Meeting in San Francisco in September.
In her book, published by Cornell University Press in October 2019, Henke explains how multilateral military coalitions are purposefully constructed by pivotal states via social ties, persuasion and side payments.
“The book marshals an impressive and rigorous mixed-method design that integrates large-N regression, in-depth elite interviews, and archival research to answer a central question in international collaboration: when and how states overcome barriers to collective action,” the APSA award committee said. “Henke develops an innovative and comprehensive social-institutional theory to answer this question."
Founded in 1903, the American Political Science Association (APSA) is a Washington, DC-based professional association of political science students and scholars. One of its roles is to recognise excellence in the political science profession, giving awards to the best dissertations, papers, articles and books in various fields.
