New leadership at the Hertie School

Henrik Enderlein to succeed Helmut Anheier as President in 2018, Axel Baisch to become new Managing Director on 1 April.

Berlin, 23 March 2017 – The Board of Trustees of the Hertie School this week set the course for a change of the university’s leadership. After nine years at the helm, Helmut K. Anheier will hand over the office of President to Henrik Enderlein in September 2018. This step reflects the continued long-term willingness of the Hertie Foundation to support the university in its expansion. Enderlein is Vice President of the Hertie School and Director of the Jacques Delors Institute – Berlin. As Professor of Political Economy, he has been a member of the school's faculty since 2005. The sociologist Anheier, who also holds a Chair at the University of Heidelberg, joined the young private university as President in 2009 after 20 years of teaching and research at universities in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Axel Baisch will become Managing Director of the Hertie School on 1 April 2017. Baisch, who holds a doctorate in law, has been Chancellor of the HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management since 2011. He has held leading positions in arts and cultural management, most recently as the Executive Director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Baisch will share the position at the Hertie School with current Managing Director Marina Frost for two months. After 1 June, Frost, who is former Chancellor of the University of Heidelberg and the Humboldt-Universität in Berlin will continue to assist the school in an advisory role.

“The Hertie School has experienced outstanding development under Helmut Anheier's leadership,” said Frank Mattern, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. “The right to award doctoral degrees, two new study programmes, the doubling of faculty, intensifying research, and the establishment of the Hertie School as a centre of international academic and political exchange in the capital are just a few examples. Early planning for his succession will ensure the continuation of this success story. Henrik Enderlein, who prevailed in an international search, is the best possible candidate to carry on this work. He is a recognised academic and political advisor with an excellent network, and an experienced leader, in particular as founder and director of the think tank Jacques Delors Institute – Berlin, an affiliate institution of the Hertie School. Axel Baisch, a highly competent manager, will stand by him in shaping the successful future of the Hertie School.”
