On ZDF, Anita Gohdes analyses the role of Starlink for the war in Ukraine

Elon Musk’s satellite internet provider could count on support from the US and Europe, the Professor of Cyber Security says.

Should the richest man in the world help decide a war? In a TV feature published by German broadcaster ZDF on 9 August, Hertie School Professor of International and Cyber Security Anita Gohdes comments on Elon Musk’s satellite internet provider Starlink and its role in the international security architecture.

“In Ukraine, we see that the use of technology has changed. We have much more high-tech devices,” Gohdes said. In addition, according to the expert on digital warfare, the role of the internet was extremely important. “Many technologies within the conflict are new and are also based on technologies that do not come from the military sphere,” she added. Even though Starlink and Elon Musk benefitted from a big publicity coup, the US and European governments were in favour of Starlink, showing that “it is not a detached one-man story,” Gohdes said.
