Postdoctoral researcher Silvia Steininger delivers guest lecture at Hochschule der Polizei Brandenburg

For the third consecutive year, the Centre for Fundamental Rights contributes to the curriculum at the central training institution for police officers in the federal state of Brandenburg.

On Thursday June 6, 2024, postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Fundamental Rights Silvia Steininger delivered a guest lecture at the Hochschule der Polizei Brandenburg. The college, at which over 1,000 future police officers are currently studying, is located to the north of Berlin in the town of Oranienburg.

The lecture is part of the elective module “Police in Europe”, which focuses on the relevance of the European Convention on Human Rights for police forces across the continent and investigates its practical implementation. The course is offered within the 3-year Bachelor’s degree programme in Higher Civil Service at the Hochschule der Polizei.

Dr. Steininger opened her lecture with reflections on the balance between police law and human rights law. She continued with a closer look at a range of case studies, examining this balance in different states, with a focus on cases in which human rights have not been upheld or guaranteed. In addition, she expanded upon the role of NGOs in relation to human rights implementation, discussing how civil society organisations can contribute to the protection and promotion of human rights in Europe.
