SCRIPTS launches Special Fellowship for Scholars at Risk

Emergency fund supports junior researchers fleeing Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.

The SCRIPTS Excellence Cluster based at the Freie Universität Berlin has recently launched an emergency fund to support scholars fleeing Ukraine, Belarus and Russia due to the war in Ukraine. Funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, SCRIPTS brings together eight Berlin universities, including the Hertie School, to consider the contestation of the liberal script from various thematic aspects and academic disciplines.

The Special Fellowship for Scholars at Risk is a short-term programme that provides junior researchers with a stipend, access to office space and the SCRIPTS research groups and networks, as well as support in acquiring third-party funding. The fund already supports two scholars at risk from Ukraine, and a third is currently in the admission phase.

Together with the Hertie School, the Institute for Eastern European Studies of the Freie Universität Berlin (OEI), the WZB Berlin Social Science Center (WZB) and the Centre for Eastern European and International Studies (ZOiS), SCRIPTS plans to establish the Berliner Wissenschaftsbrücke (Berlin academic bridge) to provide longer fellowships for refugee and at-risk scholars from Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. In the long term, this will enable the scholars to continue their research in exile until they return to their home countries, or integrate into German or European academic institutions via the submission of further research proposals.
