Health and social behaviour of students shaped by the pandemic, Klaus Hurrelmann says in DER SPIEGEL

Hurrelmann talks about the impact of the pandemic on students' development.

Many universities have sent their students back into distance learning in the fourth semester under COVID-19 regulations. "For students, the first semester at a university is an important phase for the personal development of young people", says Hertie School Professor of Public Health and Education Klaus Hurrelmann in an interview with DER SPIEGEL. "They get their first opportunity to structure their everyday lives independent of their parents."

"The pandemic will likely shape this student cohort for their lifetime," Hurrelmann told SPIEGEL, speaking of a "lost generation," at least in part. We observe great insecurity in dealing with other people," says Hurrelmann. "Some hardly know how to behave in groups," he says.

SPIEGEL also quotes the recent study "Jugend in Deutschland“ (Youth in Germany) co-authored by Hurrelmann and youth researcher Simon Schnetzer, which shows that 53 per cent of respondents between 14 and 29 said that their health had deteriorated during the pandemic.
