The inaugural workshop of the Hertie Development Network takes place immediately before 2017 Alumni Reunion.
The Hertie School welcomes thirty-five alumni from around the globe for the third international alumni workshop, to take place 26-28 April immediately before the 2017 Alumni Reunion in Berlin. This year’s workshop focuses on the field of development, representing the inaugural workshop of the Hertie Development Network (HDN).
The international alumni representing 17 different nationalities were selected through an application process, and they all have a professional background in different sectors within the field of international development cooperation.
During the three workshop days, participants will have a closer look at the term “development”. The modern, Western notion of development is increasingly challenged by the rise of the authoritarian developmental state (most notably China), with the model of “illiberal democracy” becoming more prevalent in Eastern Europe and the increasing role of political Islam. At the same time, the West itself is facing challenges internally, including the rise of populism or the inability to find answers to the challenge of sustainability. The purpose of the workshop is to review these debates with regard to the goals of development in the 21st century.
Welcoming remarks by Prof. Mark Hallerberg, keynote speeches, discussions and group work sessions take place in conjunction with group excursions and networking opportunities. Participants will then remain in Berlin to attend the 2017 Alumni Reunion.
